New York

09*17*09

Road Work

Just got back from a poker trip to New York City. I played in a terrific home game there, complete with professional dealers, massage girls, lots of good food, and an open bar. The atmosphere easily beats even that of Bobbyís Room, which, really, is as nice as it gets in a casino. †One other thing about New York is that the players like to gamble. So itís perfect for a guy like me.

The good news is that I got to fly back on a private jet with my friend Alan. He hooked me up for my first private-plane ride, and it was pretty damn cool. Itís nice to pull up to the plane in a limo and just take off. No hassles in the airport, no problems with crowds. The bad news is that I ran incredibly unlucky at poker and got my bankroll dented. I ran so awful that I even took a bad beat in Central Park. After a particularly rough session, I walked it off in the park and spotted an ice cream stand. I could have used a Popsicle at that moment. But guess what? The stand was closed.

On the upside, I stayed in the super ritzy Pierre Hotel ñ though next time Iím going for one of the cool places downtown, like Gansevoort or Standard ñ and met a couple of my high school friends for drinks at the posh Two E Bar there. We had a great conversation and they answered a question that Iíve had for a while: What did people from my hometown think about me quitting college, moving to Las Vegas, and taking up poker fulltime? Basically, it turns out, they thought I was crazy. But, at the time, they did not realize how seriously I took the game and how much skill is involved. Now, of course, they get it.

Since returning home to Vegas, Iíve been chilling out and relaxing. This coming weekend Iím heading off to L.A. with a girl Iíve been seeing. Weíre going to a double birthday party for Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly. Itís going to be a blast.

Michigan and Reality TV Pilot

08*19*09

Iíve been back in Michigan for the past week, just relaxing and hanging out with friends and family.† Every year my mom, sister and step dad rent a cabin in northern Michigan and my friends from high school and I rent a cabin next door.† I spent the week tubing, waterskiing, playing football and just catching up with my friends and family.† The laid back week at the lake was a perfect break from†my fast paced life on the Las Vegas strip.† Although, I canít really relax for more than a day or two, I need constant stimulation and I am glad to be back in Las Vegas.

Before I left Vegas I was filming a reality tv pilot with my good friend Alec Torelli.† The show is based on our friendship, the fast-paced lifestyle of Vegas and of course a good amount of degenerate gambling.† I donít want to give too much away but my favorite part of filming occurred when the film crew was shooting footage of Alec and I walking up and down the strip.† We were filming in front of Mirage, when I had a moment of inspiration and bet Alec $1,000 he couldnít summit the Volcano in front of the Mirage Hotel and Caino. Normally, I would have to bet Alec at least $10,000 to do something like this that could result in his arrest, but I figured with a film crew trailing us I could get away with less.

Mirage Volcano

He stripped down to his boxers and jumped into the lake in front of the Volcano.† It was Friday night on the strip, and the mob of people who were walking by stopped and stared to watch the spectacle, and to†snap photos.† Alec, propelled himself from ledge to ledge and eventually reached the top and raised his arms over his head in a victory celebration which got yells and whistles from the crowd.† He then started to descend and the film crew scrambled away† as they feared they might get arrested for filming this.

I waited for Alec to quickly get dressed, and noticed he had a giant gash on his foot he got from climbing the†volcano.†† We ignored the problem for the time being and ran down the strip back towards my condo, as concerns of Alecís arrest outweighed†the concern†of his†foot.† We escaped without even seeing a security guard or police officer.† Before I made the bet I figured it was 50/50 that Alec would get arrested, which I would†have loved to see.

Online Iíve been crushing this month in a limited number of hands.† Iím up over $220,000 despite being down over 40k in all equity.† (Keep in mind Iím mostly playing 25/50).† Poker is easy when you win every all in.†

Vegas Nightlife and the WSOP

08*18*09

I wrote this blog before the WSOP and never got around to finishing it/posting it.

This summer every serious gambler, along with every professional poker player converged on Vegas to get ready for the WSOP,† including many of my good friends I met when I first got started in poker.† So naturally we did what we always do when we all get together, went out and partied like rock stars.

For David Benfieldís birthday we got two tables on the main dance floor at tryst and popped bottles all night.† Floyd Mayweather and his entourage had the table immediately behind us (Tom had booked the table and he is such a legend that yes he gets better tables than Mayweather), and his table looked like a scene from a rap video.† It was full of† beautiful women with gigantic asses and monstrous bodyguards.† During the song, ìget your swag onî, Floyd, who was†dancing on the booth directly behind me took out appoxtimarly $20,000 and started waving it around.† For about 15 seconds I was sure he was going to make it rain right on top of me and I got into ready position.† I certainly am not too cool to pick up 5k off the ground, but†sadly he did not make it rain.†† At one point during the night David and a few of our other friends were sitting on the booth that shared a side with Floydís table.† Floydís bodyguard told Dave, ìTo get off Floydís tableî and Dave being the brash young whippersnapper that he is respectfully told the bodyguard, ìIt was his tableî.† The bodyguard gave Dave a evil glare, and†I for one thought us poor nerdy internet poker players were about to be beat down by the best pound for pound fighter in the world, but Dave backed down and a small section of the booth was taken over by booty dancers.

Later in the night Chris Ferguson and Fatality came over and joined our table to say hi to everyone.† Eventually, Tom wandered out to the Chrisís table with them which was out†by the pool.† They got to talking about how much money they would need to jump in fully clothed and Chris offered Tom 3k to throw one of our girlfriends in the pool.† He instantly picked her up and jumped into the pool with her.†Hearing about the story the next day I talked to the girl and told her I hoped she negotiated a share of the money.† She was soooooooo angry and said that Tom didnít give her a dime.

Anyway, a few days later we were by the pool and Tom had decided he was going to donate all of the money to the girlís favorite charity.† I told him that she was of course going to say to donate it to her bank account and shortly after I finished saying it she sent him a text confirming just that! Guess I know girls :) .

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend we made plans to go XS once again.† After finishing dinner with a beautiful girl I escorted her to the club only to find that much to my dismay the hallway connecting Encore and Wynn had been roped†off and they were only letting XS hotel guests through.† To get to XS even if you had a table you had too wait in a literally mile long line.† There must have been four times as many people outside the club as inside the club, I have never seen anything like it in my life.† Smoking hot girls, who surly never had to wait in a†line before were on raging tilt, throwing a fit, and yelling at security.† It was beautiful.†As much fun as†I have going out, the more I go out the more I see the dark-underbelly of the club scene and remind myself to keep one foot grounded in reality at all times.

As I have†lived here for 18 months now, Iíve gotten to know people everywhere.† Itís a nice feeling to be recognized by dealers, valet, waitresses, club hosts etc. and it makes you feel at home and†in control in your environment.† When I first moved here Vegas often seemed like a hostile and intimidating environment and things that were once a pain in the ass are now a breeze.

To maximize my earn during the WSOP Iíve made a bet with Antonio and Alec Torelli that we can not drink during the duration of the WSOP.† We are allowed to drink two nights during the WSOP and for every other time we drink it is a 1k penalty per night.
